This tutorial will focus on making an envelope for a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ card using the Crafter’s Companion. If you don’t already have one, it’s a must for creating really nice envelopes and boxes. Not to mention varying types of card styles.
Most of us know 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 is a standard size for cards. However, once I received the Crafter’s Companion (A system for making different style cards and envelopes) I found that it did not give instructions for an envelop for this particular card size. So, hopefully this will help all you ladies who might not know. I’ve gone through enough trial, error and paper so you don’t have to! Yay! :)
The biggest thing you must remember when creating any envelope is all sides must be equal. In other words, you must begin with a sheet of paper/cardstock that is square. Before I begin with the instructions I must note that a nice type of paper for creating “standard” envelopes for this card size is “Paper Studio” (white). I have only used the white card stock for my envelopes. You might want to try this first before changing to a different color to match your card. I can’t verify if the other colors of Paper Studio papers are as sturdy. I did make my envelopes using this particular card stock for my “Housewarming” cards and you can see the envelope on my housewarming page.
Okay, now let’s get down to the business of making the envelope. Assuming you have this product you will place your paper “flush” with the top edge of the enveloper.
- Steps
- 1. You will cut your paper at 8 1/2″ square
2. Place one corner of your paper in the corner on the Enveloper.
3. Score on line “D”
4. Rotate paper to opposite side of score line.
5. Score this line using “D” again.
6. Turn paper to one of your other corners not scored yet.
7. Score on line “F” for the two remaining corners of your paper. You will notice you now have a box shape on your paper. You will cut the corners out where your score lines meet so your envelope flaps will close nicely. Once you have cut your corners out on all four sides:Fold in the two short sides of your envelope. Smooth with your tool that comes with the Crafter’s Companion or a bone folder.Fold up one of the longer sides (image here)
You have created the envelope base to slide your card into. Now, unfold and tape the edges of the base.
*Tip: I used double-sided 1/4″ scotch tape so that I would have a strong bond. I would do one of your envelopes using your favorite type of dry adhesive to be sure it will bond well. You don’t want your envelope to *pop* open before it arrives to it’s final destination.

It’s not the best image of my envelope but it does give you some idea how it all comes together nicely. I’ll try to post some better images later. Perhaps this weekend.
Happy days and happy card making to you!
